‘The Song That I Needed’ tells a short story of how dementia affects everyday life, the subsequent distress that this brings and how playing the right song at the right time can make all the difference. See full description in YouTube bio.
I made this animation for my degree, in collaboration with the RadioMe team from the Cambridge Institute for Music Therapy Research (CIMTR).
It’s important to remember that there are many different types of dementia which affect individuals in various ways. While I have no lived experience of dementia, I hope my research and creativity bring some truthful insight.
Threadbare

This animation is about the destabilising nature of dementia and the subsequent feeling of helplessness. I deliberately used metaphorical visual language and a simple character in the hope that anyone can relate to the universal human experience of not being in control.
Created for a dementia charity as part of my degree, these animations are visual interpretations of what it’s like to live with dementia, to be used as part of training for carers.

Drain
Illustrating dementia, 2/3
This animation explores the way dementia steals life over time. It illustrates the loss of things that are precious, such as memory and personality, and the grief that comes with this loss.
Flicker
Illustrating dementia, 3/3
This animation highlights the inconsistency of the dementia deterioration process. The house represents the brain, and the flickering lights represent any given function or ability that a person may have, that has been affected by dementia. Some lights fade gradually, others come and go and some turn off suddenly without warning.
